Small projects provide vital test-beds for new ideas and techniques. For this project we share our client’s ambitions for a Lean, sustainable and environmentally friendly extension, selecting and re-using existing materials - sequestering carbon at the same time.
The homeowners were happy to challenge the existing space and explore in plan ways in which more function could be derived - corridors as rooms, built-in furniture and moving partitions - crucially reducing demolition waste which is often the case with open-plan designs.
The extension itself has been conceived to Lean-to the existing Victorian building. Careful structural detailing will give a platform for existing openings and lintels to take centre stage. The extension will be wrapped in a zinc envelope, which will age sympathetically with the old building.
