Morris Medway

Residential, Rochester

An Arts & Crafts inspired refurbishment of a Georgian townhouse in Rochester. CAB provided concept design for the remodelling. The challenge was to remodel this Georgian period townhouse so that the kitchen at lower ground floor level was not compromised. A bespoke staircase with storage was designed incorporating a fridge freezer and coffee machine.

The staircase seemingly folds out of the existing timber floorboards which means the ground floor reception area which originally was tight and dark is now open and spacious.

The key to the remodelling of the interior was to keep the existing bathroom, but to make it so that it serves only the one master bedroom as a en-suite, and then to create a new main bathroom as a spa room used by the whole house.

A feel for the utilitarian is expressed through the choice of brassware and monolithic bathtub - though a touch of the decadent is never far, with the old fireplace surround and hearth stripped back, Rachel Whiteread artwork, exposed pipework, stonewashed printed tiles are mixed in for good measure.
